II35

The advice of the Teacher will never leave my memory:
"The pain of separation is beyond explaining".

The prophet's talk of suffering in hell
described nothing more than being apart from the Friend.

Who can I ask about my wandering Friend?
The warm wind speaks in grief, and so cannot be understood.

Alas, my truant Friend is cruel,
How easily the Friend turns attentions elsewhere!

Even though my enemies mock me, I'm still happy,
to be honest, my heart is used to pain.

So remedy your old pains with ancient Wine,
"Wine will bring you joy" said the Divine Teacher.

This was the warm wind's advice to King Solomon,
"Don't try to catch the wind, you're bound to fail!"

This life of only a few days shouldn't trick you,
The cunning old crone will always find you.

Take it easy, it is a lucky man
who strives to help his Friend.

Who said, "Hafiz forgot the Beloved?"
I can never look away from such sweet beauty!
