II44

You cannot touch the Beloved's curls twice,
Nor can you count on the warm wind, or on what it says.

I'd do anything to reach you,
but man can't change the plans of destiny.

With a bleeding heart I near the Beloved's cloak,
I wouldn't let it go, even if my enemies neared.

The Beloved's face resembles the moon in the sky,
Even then, its higher than the moon.

On a clear day,
one might see the vision of the Beloved's face
If one looks in the mirror the way one should.

The riddle of Love is beyond the wisdom of man,
It cannot be solved in man's mortal kingdom.

I'm jealous that the Beloved is loved by all,
But I won't be able to defeat them all by being alone.

What can I say when you are so tender and aware,
that even my prayers will make you take notice!

I will always direct my devotion toward your eyes,
To devote myself to anything else would be a sin.
