II52

Aloneness is good if it leads me to the Beloved,
I burn like a candle for the Beloved's sake.

I wouldn't take King Solomon's ring for even a penny,
if it might be touched by the hands of a demon.

O Lord! I hope to meet the Beloved daily,
Yet I've thought ill of the Beloved when I'm suffering.

If a parrot is valued more than a raptor,
then the hawks are afraid to show their true might.

There's no need to show your concern,
Let your burning heart be your burning words.

I can never take your teachings off my mind,
A lonely traveller always longs for home.

Hafiz, if you had ten tongues,
you'd still be struck dumb
in the presence of the Beloved.
