II50

In the beginning, Allah emanated rays of beauty;
Love manifested, and all of existence lit up.

And because Allah's Love wasn't appealing to the Angels,
This brilliant force settled on human Adam instead.

Wisdom sought light from Allah's torch,
but was singed by the heat of Allah's compassion.

A stranger desired Allah's secrets,
But a hidden hand struck him angrily in the busom.

All humans get their share pleasures;
yet my sore heart remains alone and suffering.

My mighty soul seeks the apple of the Beloved's chin,
My soul is trapped by the Beloved's hair, admiring
beauty.

Hafiz, your Love-story could only be written
once happiness had broken its pen.
