II49

This world isn't worth even one sad moment,
I've sold my only cloak for wine.

They wouldn't accept my cloak at the tavern for a cup,
So why would I keep such an unholy cloak?

My foe told me to stay away, with scorn.
He meant to say: "your head isn't worthy of this
door".

If you gain a kingdom but lose your head for it,
That isn't wise, its a fool's bargain.

It seems easy to dive into the sea,
and hope for profit,
But the pearl isn't worth the pain of the storm.

O Friend! Avoid Lovers, keep them at arm's length.
A friend of Lovers is never compensated well.

Hafiz, give up this mean world and its goals,
It isn't worth it,
to have to beg for your gold from cruel men.
