III79

Brothers! Once I had a very secret heart,
I hid away all my hopes and all my fears in it.

When I was worried, sad, or hurt
My heart would be my hideout.

It was my secret friend and certainty,
And in it I knew what was best for everyone.

But then I lost it at the House of the Friend,
It was blown away by his overwhelming incomprehensible Love.

Every man is expected to be unhappy in this world.
And there is no one as miserable as I.

O Friend, pity my withered soul,
Once I was exalted and oh so grand.

But when Love taught me how to bring out the words,
My own embarrassing love-confession was made plain to all.

So let us say no more that "Hafiz had wisdom",
As you can all now see, he is both ignorant and mad.
